About Us
The Sioux Falls Great Plains Soccer Association is located in Sioux Falls, SD and provides the more serious soccer student a chance to develop and play throughout much of the year. More than 250 boys and girls in the Sioux Falls area play on Great Plains teams. Players on a team usually stay together year after year. This allows for sustained emphasis on team tactics, as well as an emphasis on player skill development. Players learn through practices, clinics, and local and regional competition. However, the primary goal is that along the way they have a lot of fun.
While there is an active Great Plains Board of Directors, parents associated with a Great Plains team have the largest voice in determining the team's activities and schedule. Parents decide how competitive the team should strive to be, how many practices and clinics to hold, and how many tournaments to play. Club soccer is famous and infamous, depending on your perspective, for overnight travel to tournament sites. These trips can be costly and can negatively impact families. But with Great Plains, again, the tournament schedule is set collectively by the parents and coaches. More tourneys are now held within local commuting distance. Also "friendship games" with local teams offer competition experience without travel.
Age groups in Great Plains Soccer are at one-year increments. From the U11 group and higher, a roster can have a maximum of 18 players. The Great Plains developmental program is a fun and special learning program for kids under age 10.
Membership in the Great Plains Soccer Club for the Fall season (begins August 1) is $65, and $90 for the Spring season. This covers liability insurance, some Great Plains sponsored clinics, a weekly training session with a Great Plains coach, and administrative fees. Additional costs may be incurred for uniforms, tournament entry fees, travel costs of any out of town tourneys, and some fees for indoor field usage in winter months. Fundraising is a part of many club teams. Some teams even have a "fundraising coordinator", a role usually assumed by one of the parents. Some teams have found sponsors to provide the funds. But in keeping with the Great Plains philosophy, parents decide if and how fundraising is to be done.
Great Plains
promotes that kids should experience many different activities, of which soccer
is only one. An exclusive commitment to soccer is not required. However, Great
Plains offers youth a sustained opportunity to play with friends who work hard,
play hard, and love the game of soccer.
